CHAPTER 13

Yesterday was so much fun that it was almost too good to be true, knowing that tonight would be a repeat of having such a good time. At some point, I did need to start thinking about what I was going to do for the future and whether or not I would head back to the city soon and start looking for new work gigs. If things kept on the track that they were heading down, I would be able to handpick gigs in the city. But even though I could go back now if I wanted to, without any bad juju following me there, I wasn’t in any rush now. And the thought of leaving Penfield meant leaving Jolie, which left a rather awful feeling in my stomach.

We had planned a trip to the local amusement park tonight to keep up the image and to have some more fun together. And for once, it was peaceful and quiet. There was very little cell phone service here, so we couldn't be disturbed by social media or calls or texts. An owl with a note attached to its foot would have to drop off a letter right in front of us if someone wanted to get a message through. It also was surprisingly not crowded, which was also refreshing considering that we have been swarmed by people everywhere we went out together.

“This is so nice,” Jolie said with a smile, and I knew she meant the calm and non intrusive nature of tonight’s date.

“Yeah, it is,” I agree. The amusement park was set up like a traveling fair, which meant that the rides were kind of rickety. To me, that made them all the more fun. There was a campy and quirky feeling like we were at a carnival that had appeared out of nowhere suddenly just for our mere enjoyment.

Jolie broke her fitness diet to share a funnel cake with me, and we played so many games that I was able to get her a giant stuffed purple unicorn with all the tickets we had accumulated. It was nothing but pure fun; in the end, it was nice to feel like we didn’t have a care in the world tonight.

Just as we were coming off of a roller coaster ride together, one that had whipped Jolie’s long hair into a tangled frenzy, we were talking about how fun the ride was and how fun all of it was.

“What other rides should we go on?” Jolie asked.

“I think we’ve been on almost all of them several times,” I laughed. “We could go on the roller coaster again, or we could try some of the calmer rides if you’d like.”

“What calmer rides?” she asked as she looked around the amusement park. “You mean the lovey-dovey ones? Like the Tunnel of Love?”

“Sure,” I laughed. “Why not?”

“Okay,” she said with a smile. “Might be fun!”

As soon as we got onto the Tunnel of Love ride, Jolie looked as if there were something she was trying to say.
